This is ozoni, a traditional Japanese soup eaten during the New Year.
It is made with a clear broth, mochi rice cakes, and vegetables such as carrots and greens, giving it a simple and elegant appearance.
Ozoni varies widely by region and family, and each version reflects local culture and New Year traditions.
To me, this single bowl captures the spirit of welcoming a new year in Japan.
These differences make ozoni a dish that reflects local New Year traditions.

In my hometown, ozoni was made with square rice cakes in broth made from dried sardines and kelp. (Round rice cakes seem to be common in Ehime, but my family used square ones because rolling them was too much trouble.) And the essential ingredient was fish cake. Other ingredients often included daikon radish, carrots, and Chinese cabbage.
返信削除I just did not understand what fish cake is at first, but imagined that it means kamaboko, right?
削除Sorry, what I meant was jakoten. Of course, kamaboko is also included in my ozoni !
削除Fish cake means "Kamaboko" I think.
